Pankun and James

Sunday started in a relaxing fashion. We spent the morning reading newspapers, talking, and generally lounging around the house. It was a slow morning partly because of a late night marathon of Pankun and James. Pankun and his faithful companion, James, are given various tasks to complete and the hilarity ensues as the two somehow convince people to let them on a bus or join a family picnic. Sometimes James gets mad and Pankun and chases him around, but eventually they make up. They're pretty much best friends.

Finally motivated enough to get out of the apartment, we went for a hike just outside the city. The original plan was to hike the trail to a tea plantation for some tasting and a demonstration of the tea making process. Unfortunately, we were too late, but the hike was fun and we met a friendly Taiwanese couple at the summit. They shared some much needed snack food with us: bananas, apples, and steamed peanuts. The steamed peanuts looked potentially terrible, but were actually really good. We also saw a fair amount of wildlife - mostly birds, butterflies, and huge spiders.

After the hike we went out to dinner at China Pa. Our favorite dishes were shark fin soup and friend shrimp with pineapple sauce. Nicole doesn't like shellfish, but even she liked the shrimp! On the way home I found the perfect beer can on the way home. A two liter can including a handle and dragonhead spout! I wasn't too confident about the spout, so I took the first drink in the bath tub in case of spills. After a couple very challenging swigs I decided that it wasn't designed for individual consumption, but rather for pouring glasses. So I had to get rid of the spout, but the can was still pretty sweet even without.
This morning we packed up and said our goodbyes to Terrance and Audrey. It was really good to see Audrey and meet Terrance and we enjoyed the opportunity to get a glimpse of their life overseas. We're staying at a hostel in a very crowded shopping district downtown. It wasn't our first choice, but after the drunk receptionist (complete with cigarette dangling from his lip) at our initial stop couldn't tell us whether he had any rooms available we decided to move on.The building we are in is basically a mall and outside is a huge Windows Vista festival rockin' out with techno music and various booths. The real reason one should use Windows Vista: scantily clad babes will talk to you about your sweet new operating system.

Reading the blog you two have has been fantastic!
Your writings have been a true pleasure to read and "look foward to" like mom said.
The culinary adventures are really wild.
I don't know how many beers it would take for me to eat fried bugs.

Kieth- Didn't you and mom experienced fire ants in Thailand (or was that only with the aid of Thai whisky?)

Nice jug Andrew!

I just sent you an unnecessarily long email about future travel plans in Germany... in the end, after babbling at length, I concluded that I should just call you. [I wanted to point out the email here in case you check the blog more often than your hotmail... that way you can get prepped for everything I'm going to say when I call ;)]

Anyway, I forget the time difference. Are you 9 hours ahead?

Wow, you've really outdone yourself. A monkey and his pet dog. Oh, sure, when you're hanging out with Che Guevara-worshiping-commies in Laos all we hear about is bombs this, American imperialists that. But now that you have a chance to talk about freedom in the face of oppression - greatly thanks to, you guessed it, The United States - we hear about what? Monkeys!

I wanted to talk to Andrew and Nicole about this, so I invited them into the No Spin Zone (NSZ) to give them a chance to speak their mind and answer some tough questions. Here's the transcript:

Bill: Andrew, when are you going to grow up and start acting your age?

Andrew: Well, I think...

B: You know, I used to want to grow my hair out and stop shaving. All my friends used to say,"C'mon, Bill, let's go out and drink some brews. It'll be a gas! Don't let the man hold you down." I know what you're feeling, "dude." But it's not about long hair, beards, and patchouli. Look, do you know who Ludacris is?

A: Yes, I...

B: I didn't think so. He's been on my show and kids think he's pretty cool. But guess what, he couldn't handle the NSZ. That means I'm still "fresh." Think about it.

A: ...

B: Nicole, I'm pretty important.

Nicole: ...

B: I've been trying to figure out why a beautiful, intelligent young lady is hanging out with a beer guzzling moron who worships communists and monkeys. Do you think you can change a man?

N: I don't think...

B: You can't. Period. Listen, I'm pretty famous, as you know, and I've got a lot of friends that I think you might like. Drop this deadbeat. Aren't those vegetarian-pizza-smelling armpits enough already?

N: ...

B: Shhhh. There, there. It'll be alright. Thanks for coming on the No Spin Zone!

And there you have if, folks. I asked the tough questions and they couldn't give me a straight answer. I just hope that they can take some advice from a guy who has been around the block a few times.
